The Pew Center on the States published a new report claiming that one out of every 99.1 adults - or 2,319,258 Americans - is now behind bars, giving America the largest prison population in the world - both in terms of per capita or raw numbers.

Former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman was sentenced to over seven years of prison and a $50,000 fine in June of 2006 for allegedly appointing someone to a state board position in return for contributions to a referendum campaign; the man had been appointed to the same position by three previous governors.
